VIOFO A229 Pro 4K HDR Dash Cam Front and Rear with Dual STARVIS 2 Sensors

The VIOFO A229 Pro is a premium dual-channel dash camera designed to provide high-resolution recording for both the front and rear of your vehicle. According to the manufacturer, it utilizes dual STARVIS 2 image sensors—the IMX678 for the front and IMX675 for the rear—enabling 4K (2160P) front and 2K (1440P) rear recording. This setup aims to deliver detailed footage for capturing license plates and road details in various lighting conditions.

With a focus on night vision, the A229 Pro incorporates HDR technology on both channels to balance highlights and shadows, potentially improving clarity in low-light scenarios. The dash cam also includes a range of smart features such as voice control, 5GHz Wi-Fi, GPS logging, and buffered parking modes, making it a comprehensive solution for drivers seeking robust evidence capture.

Dual STARVIS 2 Sensors and 4K/2K Recording

The A229 Pro stands out with its dual STARVIS 2 sensors, which are designed to enhance light sensitivity and reduce noise. The front camera records in 4K resolution, while the rear captures in 2K, according to the specifications. This combination allows for clear identification of details like license plates and road signs. The sensors are paired with a 140-degree field of view (135 degrees real angle), providing wide coverage without excessive distortion.

HDR Night Vision 2.0

HDR (High Dynamic Range) technology is applied to both front and rear cameras to improve footage in challenging lighting. The manufacturer states that this expands the dynamic range, harmonizing highlights and shadows for better license plate recognition, even at speed. This feature is particularly beneficial for night driving or entering/exiting tunnels, where rapid light changes can otherwise wash out details.

24/7 Buffered Parking Modes

For continuous protection when parked, the A229 Pro offers three parking modes: Auto Event Detection, Low Bitrate, and Time Lapse. The buffering function, when used with the optional HK4 hardwire kit (sold separately), captures 15 seconds before and 30 seconds after a detected event. This ensures that incidents are recorded without constantly filling the memory card. Note that the hardwire kit is not included and must be purchased separately.

Voice Control and 5GHz Wi-Fi

Hands-free operation is facilitated by 12 voice commands, allowing you to take photos, lock videos, and control Wi-Fi and audio without taking your eyes off the road. Additionally, the dash cam provides voice notifications for settings changes and memory card issues. The 5GHz Wi-Fi connection enables faster video transfer and live preview through the VIOFO app, making it convenient to review and share footage on your smartphone.

GPS Logging and Loop Recording

The built-in Quad-Mode GPS module supports GPS, BEIDOU, GALILEO, and GLONASS for accurate positioning. It records vehicle location, speed, and timestamp data, which can be overlaid on videos or viewed in the app. Loop recording automatically overwrites the oldest footage when the card is full, while the emergency lock feature protects important clips from being overwritten upon impact detection.

Included Accessories and Build

The package includes a CPL filter to reduce reflections, a 6-meter rear cable, a car charger, mounting stickers, and a trim removal tool. The dash cam is built with a supercapacitor instead of a battery, ensuring reliable operation in extreme temperatures from 5°F to 149°F. It supports microSD cards up to 512GB, though no card is included; VIOFO recommends their industrial high-endurance cards for optimal performance.

Who is it for

The VIOFO A229 Pro is ideal for drivers who want high-resolution front and rear coverage with advanced night vision capabilities. It suits those who value features like voice control, GPS logging, and buffered parking modes for comprehensive security. It is also a good fit for owners of cars, minivans, RVs, and trucks, given its compatibility and included 6-meter rear cable. However, those who prefer a simpler setup or are on a tight budget might find it overkill.
